Chemical Warfare

Last night, the WMD's were brought out and pitted against each other in an epic battle for truth, justice, democracy, and... sleep.

I'm certainly not an insomniac, nor am I funny like Dave Attel. But I occasionally have retarded nights where I just cannot fall asleep. Last night seemed to be like that, but unlike normally, I know why I couldn't pursue that elusive final letter.

I made the caffeine mistake. The thing is... sometimes I can have a whole bunch of caffeine and go right to sleep, so I don't usually worry about it too much. Well, anyway, I went to Appleby's with Todd and Pam when they got home from NY. We ended up waiting out a CRAZY thunderstorm at the restaurant and the diet Cokes just kept coming.

So when I got home at around 11:00PM, I went to bed. Well, sorta. Actual "sleep effort" began near 12:00AM. ;)

So at 12:00AM, I have about 6 hours of sleep before that pesky alarm clock wakes up. So I lay there.... and turn over... and again... and fluff the pillow up... and turn over... By now, Pam wants to kill me. And Yasmin, who drank a bunch of my soda, was tired as anything, but could not fall asleep either... that's why I think we both had caffeine-wakefulness.

1:00 AM... 1:30AM.... 2:00AM... still no hint of sleep. And if I THOUGHT about going to sleep, Yasmin would cry and bring me right back to painful reality.

Well, if Caffeine Hussein wants to play rough, then I will call upon some big guns myself. My WMD of choice? Nyquil. That stuff NEVER fails to blast me quickly into sleepy-land... especially when you up the dosage a little!! So shortly after two, I take my Army Humvee to the depot and stock up on ammo. Then, I flood the esophagal cave with Nyquil Special Ops and they engage the enemy deep within the corridors of my stomach.

So anyway, needless to say, shortly after 2:30AM, I am off to a happier place.

But this victory comes with a price...

...because Nyquil really does it's thing for a good 8 hours. So do the math... I'm sitting here at work at 8:00AM practically falling asleep as I write this....

Welcome to my world! I fight that battle nearly every night. I actually find that it is the fact that I know Im awake that causes me to not sleep.

Ah, you have joined the ranks of the caffeinated! Welcome.

Given my insomniac tendencies, I try to avoid coffee after 1:00 PM. But sometimes I forget about the caffeine in soda since I don't drink it very often.

As for sleep aids, I recommend testing new ones when you know you can sleep in, so you can judge how much sleep you need to allow for.

Larakin, turst me, I know exactly what you mean. A tip: try to resist the urge to look at the clock. It's better if you don't know how long you've been awake, since each passing hour makes you feel worse and worse.

I don't suppose it's ever occurred to some people that maybe caffeine is a bad drug and shouldn't be consumed?

Well, NyQuil is one of the few things I'm allergic to. I take it and days layer, I still feel uber drowsy. Also, my vision blacks out for days on end after I take it. I found this all out in college when I was taking it for a couple days straight and then finally in a moment of clarity, realized that it was making me sicker than my ailment. That stuff's vicious. Oh and caffeine is just as vicious. I stopped drinking it in the mornings and it took me almost 3 weeks to get my body back to normal.
